UNA-USA Dane County EventsEvent
DescriptionThe Sudanese civil war has been raging off and on for more than half a century. Two separate civil wars (1955-72 and 1983-2005) are counted; will there be a third? In January 2011 southern Sudanese are voting in a referendum that is expected to lead to an independent southern Sudan. But will Sudan’s northern-dominated government agree to independence for the oil-rich south? Questions abound. If independence happens, how will oil revenues be divided? What about the large numbers of Arabic-speaking, Muslim groups, who will find themselves in an independent south? What about southern-oriented groups that will find themselves in the north? What implications for these developments will there be for Darfur (which will remain part of the north if the country is divided)? Speaking on these questions on February 8 will be Professor Sharon Hutchinson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Anthropology Department. Sharon Hutchinson’s work -- academic and activist-- has focused on the southern Sudan, one of the world's most tragic conflict areas and the scene of human rights violations on a scale rare in modern history. Prof. Hutchinson’s academic work has won her many honors. She is the author of Nuer Dilemmas: Coping with Money, War and the State (1996); among many articles and book chapters is "Perilous Outcomes: International Monitoring and the Perpetuation of Violence in Sudan" (2009). We hope to see you in February! Venue
