Tuesday, December 15th, UNA-Dane Annual Meeting
Special Location (this month only): Friends Meeting House, 1704 Roberts Court
6:30 Reception
7:00 pm Annual Meeting
7:20 pm Featured Presentation: Joe Elder on Afghanistan
Our featured speaker, Joe Elder, is a professor in the departments of Sociology/ Languages and Cultures of Asia, at the U
niversity of Wisconsin-Madison. His topic will be "President Obama's Afghan/Pakistan strategy and the United Nations."
On December 1st, in a nationally-televised speech at West Point, President Obama outlined forthcoming U.S. policies in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Professor Elder will review President Obama's speech, the policies it outlined, and the implications of those policies for the future role of the United Nations.
Many of us are concerned about the implications of the president's pledge to send more troups to this troubled region; this is your chance to learn more, and to be in dialogue with others who share those concerns. A question and answer session will follow Prof. Elder's presentation.
This lecture and discussion occurs during the monthly membership meeting of the United Nations Association-USA of Dane County. Our meetings (and the pre-event reception) are free-of-charge and open to all. Free parking is available in the ramp across the street. The auditorium is just inside the main entrance, to the left of the front desk.
Our group hosts a wide variety of speakers on topics related to the United Nations and international social justice, in our monthly member meetings, held at this same location on the second Tuesday of each month (except for July and August). The schedule for early 2010 will be posted shortly on the Events page of this website.
(Tuesday December 15th's year-end meeting will also involve a pre-meeting reception, and a brief annual business meeting. Reception is at 6:30pm; brief annual meeting at 7pm; Joe Elder's presentation will follow 15-20 minutes later.)
