Description"Guantanamo, Military Tribunals and the Rule of Law" co-sponsored by UNA Dane County Chapter and Witness Against Torture (Madison.) on Tuesday, January 10, 2011 at 7 pm at Edgewood College in the Auditorium at Predolin Hall. The program will begin with the screening of a 30-minute documentary titled "The Response." It is a courtroom drama based on upon the actual transcripts of the Guantanamo military tribunals. In the film, three military judges must decide the fate of a suspected enemy combatant. Is he guilty of providing material support to Al Qaeda, leading to the deaths of several Americans soldiers" Or is he an innocent victim of circumstances, as he claims? The film was created in 2008 in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Law and Venable LLP. Bonnie Block, retired lawyer and past UNA Chapter president, and Joy First, who has been part of national WAT actions, will facilitate a discussion of the issues raised by the DVD, including the role of international law, the application of the UN Convention Against Torture, and what has happened to President Obama's pledge to close Quantanamo.
