Visiting Nanking to Promote Reconciliation between China and Japan around the 1937 Massacre of Chinese Civilians by the Japanese Military
April 9, 2013
Presenter: Susan O’Leary
Kazuaki Tanahashi’s commitment to peace as a Japanese national is rooted in response to the Japanese atrocities in Nanking, China in 1937 and 1938, which to this day affects Chinese-Japanese relations. Zen teacher, scholar and artist, Kaz’s experience in each informs his work as a peace activist. In 2007 he was an organizer of the 70th anniversary international conference in Nanjing, “Remembering Nanking.” I traveled to Nanjing, China with Kaz last September, and will discuss what I learned in witnessing and being a part of his continuing Chinese-Japanese peace work.
