February 2011 UNA Chapter Program Sharon Hutchinson, UW Madison Sudan's Referendum and the Oil-Rich South"
Available on cable TV and Madison City Channel
Our February 2011 chapter meeting was a mixture of hope and the sober reality of creating a new country in the context of a difficult history. Sharon Hutchinson, professor of anthropology at the UW Madison and an authority on the Sudan and its culture gave an overview of the geographic and ethnic map of the Sudan. She then spoke in depth about the many difficulties the Sudan will have to successfully and peacefully create a separate state in the south.
| The program was timely in that the day before the results of the vote for secession of the South from the North were released. The vote was 98%+ in favor of secession. The overwhelming vote in favor of separation told a story of joy and success for many. At the same time it masked the realities of overcoming a history of personal and political mistrust, ethnic diversity, contention for control of natural resources, ethnic cleansing, civil war and many other seemingly insurmountable obstacles to peace. |
